A Big Bull for John
7 Nov 2009 at 12:49am
We ran probably 10 miles off the reef, past the southbound shipping lanes and toward the middle of the Gulfstream. Southbound ship traffic always runs just inside the stream to avoid it's six-knot northerly current. Northbound traffic rides the middle to take every advantage of the extra push. We found a small weed line of Sargasso and put out our baits... Read more...

East Coast Fall Bite is On
5 Nov 2009 at 12:00am
The bite is on up and down the eastern seaboard and boats are limiting on a variety of fish - that is if they are able to get out. This fall has been a particularly windy one, and relatively calm days are few and far between. Read more...

Catching Rockfish in the Albemarle Sound
31 Oct 2009 at 5:28am
While the fish we caught were relatively small, we had a blast catching over twenty rocks in less than thirty minutes. Once we located a school while trolling plugs, we stopped and jigged the pilings . Had double hook-ups numerous times. Actually left them biting at dark!

Catching Bluefin Tuna in the Northeast US is Exciting and Rewarding
28 Oct 2009 at 8:29am
Although fall means that bluefin tuna season is almost over in the northeast, some big catches can still be made by those who watch the weather and make the 20 to 30 mile trip offshore in search of BFTs. Fishing offshore in the northeast US usually means being a part of a fleet of anglers, all looking for the same thing - a big tuna...Catching Bluefin Tuna in the Northeast US is Exciting and Rewarding originally appeared on About.com Saltwater Fishing on Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 at 12:29:27. Take Advantage of Bad Weather
26 Oct 2009 at 1:34am
Sometimes the weather and wind is just too much for us to handle. We sit home wishing we were fishing. There are some things we can do when the weather kicks up and prevents us from getting out on the water. I wonder how many of you think about these things on bad fishing days

Amberjack Fishing Closed in Gulf of Mexico
21 Oct 2009 at 12:53pm
According to a press release from the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) and on the heals of radical changes to the grouper fisheries in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico and an expected total closure of red snapper fishing, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has now closed amberjack fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, effective October 24. According to the release, the science involved in this decision is sketchy at best. Commercial fishing interests are apparently not affected by this latest closure. The reason being stated is that the recreational harvest has reached its quota for the year. How that harvest is measured remains a mystery - I have never been stopped or asked about my catch in over 50 years of fishing. None of my captain friends have had their catches question. So - where does the NMFS get their catch numbers? Good question...

When is a Swivel not a Swivel?
20 Oct 2009 at 1:10am
The swivel is normally the tie point between line and leader. It is supposed to act, as its name implies, as a swivel point. Essentially, the leader and everything below the swivel can spin and twist with out twisting your line. Instead, the bottom half of the swivel is supposed to turn. We all use them at some point in our fishing life. Swivels are an important part of the terminal tackle in use by most saltwater anglers. Yes, we all use them - but do we all use them for the same reasons?

Fort Macon Secrets
15 Oct 2009 at 1:16am
I am spending this week in North Carolina to sample some of the fantastic fall striper (rockfish) fishing. On another trip in past years we went to the Fort Macon State Park jetties on the coast near Morehead City. The park is alive and well, and the fishing is just as good. Take a look and see what I mean...

Top Ten Fish Recipes
5 Nov 2009 at 5:03am
I love fish cooked in a lot of different ways. Some are more healthy than others, but they all taste good. As the weather turns bad this is a good time to pull out some of those frozen fish and cook them up, bring back the fishing trip when you caught them. Fresh fish are better but even frozen fish are better than no fish at all.

Cold fronts are the bane of spring fishing but they can kill the bite in the fall, too. There are some tips to follow to try to get sluggish bass to hit after the sky turns bluebird clear, temperatures drop and the pressure goes sky high. Try them and see if they work for you.

Braided lines are very good for some kinds of applications while fishing. They have good and bad points. Decide if braids are what you need for your fishing and use them but be careful - you can cut yourself badly if you try to wrap it around your hand and break it.

Crappie Fishing Survey

A few years ago I found out how fisheries biologists make predictions about populations and fishing for lakes and rivers. Crappie are one of the most popular fish in the south and they survey the populations each year. The methods they use were very interesting to me.

Finesse fishing is using light line and small lures to catch fish. Sometimes it is just about the only way to catch bass. You should always have a light outfit with you ready for those tough times when finesse fishing is the best way, and maybe the only way, to catch bass.

There is an old saying KISS - keep it simple, stupid. This can apply to fishing. All too often we get too involved in our equipment and forget to think and catch fish. Slow down, think about what you are doing and why you are fishign and keep it simple.

If we don't take kids fishing our sport has no future. If you have kids or grand kids, take them fishing. Expand that to nieces, nephews, friends kids and even volunteer your time with kids groups. You will benefit from the experience and the kids will love it.

Five Species Of Alaska Salmon
28 Oct 2009 at 3:19pm
There are five species of salmon found in Alaska waters. These Pacific salmon all run up freshwater rivers and streams to spawn then they die. They are fun to catch and great eating. I was lucky enough to catch three of the five species on my trip to Alaska this past August. We had some of the Coho filets shipped home and they are fantastic when grilled.
