The Boat
11 Mar 2010 at 12:32am
In all the years I spent growing up, including my early married years, I never really had to own a boat, not because everyone in South Florida already had a boat (I certainly didn't!), but because I always had a boat available to me... Read more...

Blues on the Move
9 Mar 2010 at 12:06am
This winter had all the makings of a delayed run of spring fish. Water temperatures stayed colder much longer on the south Atlantic coast, and the temperatures were much colder than those of the previous five winters Most of us talking around the bait tank at the local tackle shops figured a later spring run of migrating fish...not so! Florida's Hidden Treasure
7 Mar 2010 at 2:24am
A short drive from most areas of the southeast United States, but a world away from daily pressures, sits one of the last areas in Florida that remains relatively untouched by human development. North Florida's Wilderness Coast, and specifically Wakulla County, is making a conscious effort at bringing in orderly, managed growth to the area, growth that benefits the local economy while protecting an almost pristine environment... Jigs, Molds, Sinkers and Bucktails
3 Mar 2010 at 2:17am
To save money and keep me from counting pennies while I fish, I pour my own sinkers and jig heads, and usually wrap my own bucktails. I remember growing up watching and learning from my father just how to pour lead with a sinker or jig mold. His method won't work for me today, and you'll see why as I explain it... Read more...

The Age of Electronics
1 Mar 2010 at 2:22am
Depth finders, fish finders, depth sounders, GPS, LORAN-C, chart recorders: the list is long and growing every day. These are the tools available for today's fisherman. From the days of Mark Twain and the weighted depth finder line on a riverboat we have grown into an electronic world of high tech gadgets to help us find and catch fish... Read more...

Global Warming Observations
26 Feb 2010 at 12:49am
In the news this morning scientists are saying that worldwide, based on satellite data since 1979, this past January was the warmest on record; this past November through January was the warmest November through January on record; and 2000 - 2009 was the warmest decade on record.I'm looking at two sides of the whole warming issue as I write this. One side - called by many the tree hugging environmentalists - almost says the world is coming to an end if we don't stop doing a lot of what we are doing. The other side - usually ultra conservatives - calls all the global warming hype just that - hype... Read more...

California Halibut Derby Postponed for 2010
23 Feb 2010 at 1:22am
With a bold, tough decision, the Marina Del Ray Anglers in California have decided to do what is in the best interest of our sport by postponing their 35 year old halibut derby for 2010:
Marina Del Rey Anglers announced the annual MDR Halibut Derby has been put on a one
year hiatus for 2010. "This is one of the most difficult decisions our board has
ever made," said MDRA President Ken Raymond. "After 35 years of successful MDR
Halibut Derbies and months of painful discussion and soul searching we have decided
to take this action."
"We want make sure our MDR Halibut Derby is good for our thousands of loyal
participants as well as our beloved halibut," added Josh Gerson, MDRA incoming
president. "Our first obligation is to the Santa Monica Bay, the marine
environment, our local halibut fishery and the communities we serve. We hope to be
back in full force in 2011."
Apparently the red tides of 2005 and 2006 in the Marina Del Ray area caused a low replenishment of halibut in the immediate area. I applaud this group for thier stance and the actions they are taking to protect these great fish.

Catching Winter Mackerel in Florida
18 Feb 2010 at 12:36am
Winter is the time of year that schools of Spanish mackerel invade the inshore areas like Biscayne Bay in South Florida. Big cero mackerel are also caught up and down the Florida Keys. This is the time of year to break out the wire leaders and nylon jigs. A few bait tips won't hurt either!

Is President Obama Going To Ban Sport Fishing?
10 Mar 2010 at 8:52am
There is much outcry from both conservative and liberal groups about the possibility of Obama banning sport fishing. An ESPN blog got it started and many on both sides have run with it. The controversy revolves around the ending of the public comment period for a policy group studying what to do about fishing zones and where you can and can not fish.
Fishing has already been banned by the Bush administration in some areas. This was done supposedly to protect endangered or threatened fish species. One comment on the liberal Media Matters site asks "When did fishing become a right?" Actually, many states, including mine here in Georgia, have passed constitutional amendments that say hunting and fishing is a right.
Read both sides of this controversy and then share your thoughts in the comments section below.

How To Fish A Carolina Rig
8 Mar 2010 at 5:02am
Carolina rigs took the fishing world by storm a few years ago when some tournaments were won on them. I first started fishing this type rig in the early 1970's, calling it either a split shot rig or a swivel worm rig. Carolina rigs should be part of any fisherman's arsenal now.

Life Jackets and Kill Switches
7 Mar 2010 at 5:31am
Everyone knows fast boats can kill you. But a simple action that takes only a few seconds can save your life. Every time you crank your engine on a boat, especially a bass boat, you should be wearing your life jacket and have a kill switch attached. Although foot gas controls on boats have helped, you don't want your gas motor in gear and running if you get thrown out. And you want to stay afloat. Most tournaments require life jackest to be worn and kill switches attached any time the big motor is running.

Buying a Boat
6 Mar 2010 at 5:18am
It is often said the two happiest days in a boat owners life are the day he buys the boat and the day he sells it. Buying a boat brings out all kinds of emotions, some good and some bad. Some of us go through the process several times and others find once is enough. I have bought seven bass boats, four new ones and three used ones, and each one is special in many ways. Here are some of the emotions I feel when buying a bass boat.

Do You Need A Sebile Magic Swimmer Sinking Model Swimbait In Your Tacklebox?
5 Mar 2010 at 5:39am
The Sebile Magic Swimmer is an excellent hard swimbait that has very realistic action. The original version got a lot of attention when some tournaments were won with them. The original model sinks, but slowly. Some fishermen wanted a bait that would get deeper faster so Sebile came out with the sinking model. It fills a needed niche in your tacklebox - a hard swim bait that will get deeper faster but still have good action.
Have you used a Sebile Magic Swimmer, either an original or sinking model? What do you think about it? Share your comments in the section below.

Glass and Brass For Bass Fishing
5 Mar 2010 at 5:32am
It may sound more like a home decorating tip than something you use for fishing, but glass and brass might help you catch more bass. Brass refers to brass sinkers and glass to glass beads when you use them on Carolina rigs. Give this set-up a try to make more noise with your Carolina rig and see if it helps you catch more bass.

Alligator Gar Fact Sheet
4 Mar 2010 at 3:41am
Alligator gar are ugly fish that get huge. They are some of the biggest fish in North America, reaching 350 pounds and 10 feet long. Found along the Gulf coast from the Florida panhandle around to Mexico and north up the Mississippi River drainage to the mouth of the Missouri and Ohio Rivers, they like sluggish rivers and lakes.
